Indigo Natural Dye Wall Hanging

Jaspe threads are naturally dyed with indigo to create the this lovely textile depicting the weavers connection with the natural world. From the top, the second and last rows represent rows of corn, the most important crop for the Maya. In between are pine trees.

Jaspe (ikat) is a precise and labor intensive process in which designs are first carefully planned out and warp thread is accordingly tied off, dyed, untied, then carefully aligned on the loom before weaving even begins. This special limited edition piece is handwoven on a backstrap loom by weavers in San Juan la Laguna. They have kept the textile on the loom for you to display.
