Let's go to the zoo!

The felt artisans visit the Guatemala City zoo!

In January, the artisans who create our felted wool collection took a field trip to La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City, to observe animals and generate ideas for new designs. Women from four artisan groups, plus the Mayan Hands team, gathered for a day of learning and laughter.

Research and observation: hands-on design education

"It was an enriching experience for all of us! Artisans took their task seriously: taking notes, making observations, and documenting with photos. Some made video calls home to show their kids a favorite animal!

-Nancy, Production Coordinator

Artisan training, including skills training and learning experiences like the zoo trip, are an ongoing part of Mayan Hands programs. "Stepping out of their usual routine meant the artisans could approach the research task from a place of peace and tranquility. They paid close attention to proportions and features of different animals, making suggestions about colors and form," shared Nancy, who coordinated the trip.

The social bonds and connections that artisans form during shared activities also "It’s special for artisan groups to spend time together outside of work, and to get to know women in other groups. They took full advantage of the opportunity!”

What's your favorite animal?

“Observing live animals gives new perspective on their traits and unique character. The penguins, which are a newer addition to the zoo, were a favorite! And the capybara was exciting for many people to see, because it’s very popular with kids and appears on many toys and products for children."

-Marisol, Social Programs Coordinator

Creative fuel for new designs

Experiences like the zoo trip give artisans creative fuel to develop new designs. Our artisan partners learned needle felting as a way to supplement their income. Some have previously worked as weavers, but for others, this is their first time earning an income through craft. With hard work and ingenuity, they mastered a new skill and brought our collection of animals and ornaments to life!

Stay tuned for new products developed as a result of inspiration from the zoo trip!
