Natural Dye Jaspe Wall Hanging in Café (Brown)

TWH-NDc

This limited edition wall hanging is handwoven on the backstrap loom. An elegant neutral color palette and versatile vertical design make this wall hanging a striking adornment for your home. The weavers kept the textile on the loom for you to display.

This heirloom-quality wall hanging is made in San Juan la Laguna by a group of weavers who have preserved the art of natural dyeing. Traditional jaspe (ikat) designs depicting trees, human figures, and geometric motifs are rendered with natural dyes sourced from native wild and cultivated plants.

To create their designs, weavers first prepare the warp threads by meticulously tie-dying the threads in specific repeating patterns, preventing the dye from penetrating the thread under these knots. The weavers then submerge the threads into baths of plant materials. In this wall hanging, the warm brown tone comes from coffee or cafe. The warp thread is then placed in a hot bath of banana bark to stabilize the natural dye colors.

After the threads are dyed and dried, the weavers untie the knots on the warp, revealing the patterns they created earlier. They carefully arrange the warp on their backstrap looms and only then begin to weave.

Each handmade piece is unique, and color and pattern may vary slightly. Threads are dyed in small batches and dye lot variation is an expected result in the natural dye process.
